Gasthof zum grünen Baum

Ceramicist homestead for over 500 years

When the Elector Joachim I exchanged the Boitzenburg Castle for the Zehdenick Castle owned by Hans von Arnim in 1528, the castle register reported from the “Town in front of the Castle” with a “Krüger, serves to the Boitzenburg House”.

Due to the market law, Boitzenburg attracts merchants and farmers from the far surrounding area. In 1713 there is a market twice a year in the “Little Town”. But the effects of the Thirty Years‘ War and the plague that followed are still very much present. Boitzenburg is „up to now hardly recovered and still very desolate.“ Not only the Cistercian convent fell victim to the war, the „Schankkrug, the little town, also known as the Schlosskrug, is completely ruined“.

Under the name “Oberkrug”, the inn was sold in 1789 from the von Arnims estate to a Kruger who, as was customary at the time, took over it with all the household items and some land.

In 1898 the Bliss family took over the post office and
Change station and calls it like some inns in the region and during this time „Gasthof zum green Baum“. 40 kilometers apart, which was a day’s journey back then
they offer travelers horse change,
Accommodation and meals.

In the square in front of the house there is still a cattle market and so the „Green Tree“ has – according to reports, one of the last
Owner – a good living.

The inn survived the world wars largely unscathed, only the planned economy of the GDR and frequently changing tenants make the operation unprofitable, the repair backlog is getting bigger and bigger. As an extension of the inn, the stables were used in the 1950s and 1960s as a breeding station for cold-blooded animals. The horse sayings on the walls of today’s restaurant bear witness to this.

After the demolition of a large barn, the agricultural goods trade with everyday goods moves from the inn to a flat new building, and many Boitzenburgers know about buying their first bicycle or the goods under the counter.

In the 1970s, people still meet in the inn or for a sociable dance in the beer garden, and the youth of the village come together regularly in the youth club until the inn is finally closed in 1980. In 1987, renovation of the house began with the demolition and reconstruction of the front part of the building, but the work came to an abrupt end with the reunification in 1989.

In 2008 the current owners buy the dilapidated buildings, which have suffered massive vacancies for over 30 years. While the old inn is still on its rescue and renovation
waiting for the hotel, from 2013 the stables will be
and redevelopment of consumption at great expense. Since 2014 you can sleep, eat and drink in style here.
